A Magical Journey Through Mauna Kea Tea Garden: Three Generations United by Tea

Embarking on a family adventure with my mother, daughter, and husband, we discovered the enchanting Mauna Kea Tea Garden—a place where nature’s beauty and the art of tea harmoniously intertwine. Nestled on the slopes of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea, this serene sanctuary offered us an unforgettable experience, culminating in a traditional Japanese Chado tea ceremony amidst the lush greenery.

A Stroll Through Paradise

Our journey began with a guided walk through the tea fields, surrounded by native Ohia forests and an array of fruit-bearing trees, including guava and cinnamon. The diverse vegetation not only provided a picturesque backdrop but also highlighted the farm’s commitment to natural farming practices, fostering a balanced ecosystem where insects, wildlife, and farm animals coexist to manage weeds and promote soil health. 

As we meandered along the gravel paths, we marveled at the vibrant tea plants thriving under the Hawaiian sun. The farm’s dedication to cultivating tea without chemical fertilizers and pesticides was evident in the vitality of the landscape. 

The Enchanted Treehouse

In the heart of the garden stood a charming treehouse, an inviting space that seemed to emerge from a fairytale. This rustic retreat served as the setting for our Chado tea ceremony, offering a tranquil vantage point overlooking the verdant fields. The absence of Wi-Fi and cellular service encouraged us to fully immerse ourselves in the moment, embracing the simplicity and beauty of our surroundings.

The Art of Chado: A Timeless Tradition

Gathered in the treehouse, we participated in the Japanese loose-leaf style tea ceremony known as Senchado. Guided in a casual yet reverent manner, we learned to appreciate tea using all our senses, focusing on the subtle details of aroma and flavor. This quiet experience emphasized the beauty of being present, allowing us to connect deeply with the essence of the tea and the environment. 

Sipping the farm’s artisan green teas, we savored the delicate flavors that reflected the purity and natural quality of the leaves. The Premium Green Tea, handpicked with care and pan-fired to perfection, offered a gentle aroma and sweet taste with mild astringency.
